What to do with gifts from an ex: keep, return, sell or swap
October 7, 2026
A gift from an ex is rarely just an object. It carries a memory, and sometimes a mood. Here is a simple way to decide what to do with it, without rushing or forcing a feeling.
Ask three questions
- Do I actually use or enjoy it? If yes, keeping it is fine. A good jacket is still a good jacket.
- How do I feel when I see it? If it stings every time, it is taking up more space than its size.
- Is it valuable, or sentimental only? Valuable items are easy to sell. Sentimental ones may need more time.
Your options
- Keep it if it is useful and does not hurt. No rule says you have to purge everything.
- Box it up for a few months. Put the box somewhere you don’t see it daily, set a reminder, and decide later.
- Return it if it clearly belongs to them or they ask, ideally with a short, kind message.
- Sell it if it has real resale value. The money can go to something that is just yours.
- Swap it for something you will enjoy. It is a lighter way to hand things on.
- Donate it if it is not worth the effort of selling.
A note on privacy
If you sell or swap online, keep personal details out of the listing and don’t include photos that show names or dates. Only share contact details when you are comfortable.
There is no wrong answer here, only what feels right for you right now.
